Memorial Day - 2010

Memorial Day (formerly Decoration Day) was established to honor U.S. service personnel who died in uniform while serving their country. Memorial services are held throughout the country and people celebrate with parades and picnics.

Too many have died, not only in the U.S. but every other country. And the killing continues. Sometimes I think we don't learn a damn thing. Or perhaps humans love to make war on other humans. Whatever, it never seems to stop.

We call her Pookie...

...but Haley is her name and she's in her 11th year. She doesn't bark at all. She lays on the couch. She loves to eat - everything. She hates, really hates, being left home alone. The human race exists to pet her.

A life well leafed

A couple of months ago, we posted photo number 3 - a barren and severely pruned tree in the Heathbrook outdoor mall. There were a large number of trees that looked exactly like this one.

The second photo was taken several weeks ago - same spot, different tree (I think).

The first photo derives from about a week ago...again, a different tree but same shopping center.

Actually, at this point with all the trees in full leaf, I'm not certain which one was the original!

This post is for Memphis MOJO at "Just Sayin'". I have to say, though, he's used to much classier joints!

Gator's Dockside

We took these photos just before Easter...Gator's Dockside is a casual affair, offering the usual complement of hamburgers, fries, seafood, and drinks. The food and service is good. The only problem we saw was the big gator who somehow got the Easter Bunny trapped in his mouth.

Seven Sisters Inn - back in business

The Seven Sisters Inn, subject of several posts over the past year, has emerged from bankruptcy and the new owners are restoring it to its original glory, ghosts and all. Yea!

More information about the inn is here.

Marion County Schools - Headquarters

The Marion County Schools building is located in the old downtown area. It's a fairly large district with about 30 elementary schools, eight middle schools and eight high schools. It also operates a variety of other schools such as charter and technical schools.

The building is guarded in front by this colorful horse - one of the 55 plus horses around the area which are part of Ocala's "Horse Fever."

Note: This post was mistakenly sent to Florida Fotos yesterday.

Mural at Tijuana Flats restaurant

We went back for a second time to eat at Tijuana Flats. Sitting right in front of this mural, I couldn't resist taking a photo.

RIP, Bryan

The owner of this vehicle must have felt great affection for Bryan.

Panera Bread X 2

Ocala now boasts two Panera Bread restaurants. This makes us happy as we are big fans of Panera Bread. So, whether we find ourselves on the east or the west side of town, we can quickly reach the nearest Panera Bread to enjoy a wonderful meal...not to mention a wide selection of delicious pastries!

The snobs

...and they can't sing, either!
"Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again." — Henri Cartier-Bresson
