For the birds

Four miles from our home is a piece of the Cross Florida Greenway: a six-mile paved loop through several different types of terrain. Someone decided to provide a home and food for the local birds by hanging a small bird house, a bell-shaped chunk of feed and a wind chime from a small tree - to keep the birds happy.

I've never seen a bird near this tree, however. But as they say, it's the thought that counts.

  1. C'est vraiment très original et je souhaite qu'il vienne des oiseaux !

  2. The wind chime would scare them away, the hanging house can hardly be attractive and as for food there should be plenty around anyhow.

Hey, maybe this is an art installation?

  3. So true, it's important that somebody atleast thought of this kind gesture towards the birds. We keep a small bowl of water in the veranda for the birds along with some grains... although we see a very few birds in the day but.. who knows when they get thirsty during these tough summer days here in Mumbai!!

  5. Hi Jacob
Birds think different from us. I was built one bird house too but birds prefer my house roof!
Thanks to your encouragement comment about my photos.

  6. Cute. I wonder why they don't come.

  7. Very good image, there is so much in this tree that's a pity birds ignore it.
Maybe they find it somewhat scary?

  8. No wonder. Maybe that's too much nesting offer. As you say, intention counts.

  9. It's bird heaven! I really like the effect you used!

  10. The bird house looks inviting enough but I'm afraid the bright mobile on the left might be a deterrent. Any bird food there ?

  11. Nice shot. Maybe it's too well organized and unnatural for the birds :-)

  12. It looks very good, but I am afraid, that birds have theirs own imagination of place to be happy.

  13. The bell-shaped thing looks like a wasp nest. Maybe that's why the birds are not frequent...
    Nice shot!

  14. @ Cezar - You could be right; I hadn't thought about that.

  15. They may not like the chimes either. They might find the noises strange.

But, like you say, it's the thought that counts!!!

  16. @ Halcyon - Thanks for "chiming" in with your thoughts. I think you may be right. And I hadn't thought about that before. Sheesh. Imagine yourself a little bird trying to get a good night's sleep in the little house and that damn chime clanging away!

    ;-))

  17. @ Per Stromsjo - How come you're so darn smart? I think you could be correct.

  18. Those birds have everything they want---a home, food and a pretty bauble to look at. MB

  19. I wonder if it is the chimes, or the area? Keep watching and if you ever see birds start, tell us.

I know I put a bird feeder out in our front yard in my crabapple tree and the birds would not touch it. Then I put them about 20 feet away from it and I cannot keep them filled.

  20. @ Rose - Interesting comment. It could be this feeder is too close to the tree, to the ground, and to the trail...

So maybe it is for decorative purposes?

  21. If the birds don't find it I am sure the squirrels will!!!

  22. Wasn't that nice of someone to put that up for the birds?

  23. LOL it probably scares the birds, but it looks pretty!

  24. The thought is nice, but I too think the wind chime is definitely scaring them away.

  25. I wonder if the birds don't land because there's so much stuff there there's no room for them!

  26. Jacob, this is so charming! Love it.

  27. The beautiful thing with artistic freedom is that you can reinterpret anything. At least that's what they say. So, regardless of how this was intended, we could agree that it is in fact an installation. And the birds are happy elsewhere. Case closed.

  28. Perhaps there aren't really any birds at all around that area. :) Or perhaps there's a larger animal that hangs out around that tree, keeping the birds at bay. This picture almost looks like a painting to me. Everything is so sharp and clear and colourful.

  29. What a nice thing for someone to do! PLUS it makes a neat photo op.

  30. Isn't that somethin'! I wonder if they go back & check it from time to time, then replace them when needed?!!

  31. That thoughtful gesture served three purpose that I can see: a resting place for the birds, an artistic outlet and it sure made an interesting photo!

  32. Same with the photographer. ;)

  33. Birds or not,
it's the thought that makes me smile looking at this scene, thank you! :-)

Vienna seems to have many people who care about birds - even out in the woods do I find birdhouses which are kept stocked with seeds and such.
