I can't remember the name of these things, but they usually fly in flocks, or whatever you call a group of birds, and you'll find them in cow pastures and other strange places. Lois Anne called me outside yesterday and pointed to a point way up in one of our pine trees where she said four of the critters flew to take up temporary residence.
They stayed for awhile and then departed with a flapping of wings to a neighbor's front yard where they were joined by another dozen or so and the group meandered about the neighborhood picking at stuff in the grass. Then they left.
Why they chose to perch in our tree I do not know. Such a thing has never happened before.
I think it's an Ibis, but I'm no expert. If anyone knows differently, speak up! I'm curious, too.
ReplyDeleteGuess it was a bird post day, eh? :)
Yes, Becky...you are right. It's an Ibis.
ReplyDeleteExcellent choice for a picture. The ibis' bill looks like it might make a good backscratcher.
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky: I would like to have some beautiful ibises around. The only birds here are pigeons and seagulls: I live in an area ornithologically deprived.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that obvious? They're aiming for a career on City Daily Photo!
ReplyDeletemagnifique cet oiseau, je ne connaissais pas.
ReplyDeletesplendid this bird, I did not know.
wonderful capture!
ReplyDeletemaybe they wanted to be featured on CDP!
The whole picture appears like one design! The red beak certainly draws your attention first... right at the subject!! Nice compostion!
ReplyDeleteI thought it was a pelican - nothing like it round hereways.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful bird, Jacob Meister! I think it's called a "Florida Robin!" Just trying to be helpful!
ReplyDeleteWe never had them around till about 5-6 years ago. Now they are everywhere;much like the iguanas. Perhaps nature has something in mind.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a wonderful creature to find in your backyard. I suppose they can leave a big droppings if they're anything like Canada Geese, so watch where you walk
ReplyDelete@ Safe Leif - Are you sure you're not a Minnesota loon?
ReplyDeleteIt is always weird to see large birds in trees when you usually see them on the ground. But it is a cool shot and as the bird thought---newsworthy. MB
ReplyDeleteNow that picture is just plain fun. He sure is a goofy looking thing isn't he? It's the Florida version of the Heron. Who knew they'd be tree dwellers. He looks pretty large..... good thing you were not standing UNDER the tree.
ReplyDeleteThat is an amazing looking bird. I've never seen one before.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot Jacob!
He's a beauty! We don't get fellows like this in my yard. :)
ReplyDeleteI believe its a crane or ibis ... really nice shot!
ReplyDeleteHow fun to see that in your tree! We have some big white birds that hang out in pastures. They are called "Cattle Egret", not as large or as colorful as yours.
ReplyDeleteAnd he's huge. Looks like your yard was providing much needed food stuffs. Delicious grubs or something. What a cool looking bird.
ReplyDeleteThat's a bird I never have seen here in the northwest. Our big bird around here would be the Blue Heron. Lucky you.
ReplyDeleteoh gosh...This bird is gorgeous! You and Lois Anne are so lucky to have found it there! Fabulous shot!
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Luxembourg
Léia
Refreshingly odd fella! What was he looking for? For a fantastically quirky gal?
ReplyDeleteBuenos Aires Photo
@ Buenos Aires - there were actually four of them in the tree, but I couldn't get a good shot of them all together. They were picking at the bark, so they must have found something they liked...but soon the joined another group on the ground and wandered through people's yards for a time and then flew away...
ReplyDeleteSo exotic for me:) Great shot!
ReplyDeleteAmazing catch! Ibis are just great but unfortunatelly we don't have them here... Maybe with the climate changes, who knows! Lol! Big green red-headed parrots are allready thriving in Oeiras, so... :-)
ReplyDeleteIs that exotic, or what? I get excited when I see a little red-tailed hawk or a duck around here. This thing would totally make my week. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beauty. Not a local bird my way for sure.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Ibis! Wonderful picture.
ReplyDeleteInteresting bird, Jacob. I have no idea what it is as it doesn't fly over my neck of the woods. ;-)
ReplyDeleteI think he flew up there in that tree so he could pose for us Jacob! He's a beautiful bird. I see them around here but have never had one in my yard.
ReplyDeleteWow! I like the crisp detail on this bird. So neat that you got to capture a photo of him in your very own yard. - I have been enjoying all of your colorful photos this morning. I love getting to see your beautiful town!
ReplyDeleteReally nice picture!
ReplyDeletePreciosas y originales fotografias.
