Mt. Zion AME Church is located at 623 S. Magnolia Avenue near downtown Ocala. Established in 1871, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

@ Sean - This is part of the Bible Belt. We have over 200 Baptist churches alone. Then we have representative churches from all the other denominations, plus a bunch of independent types.
The old saw about "a church on every corner" is almost true in this part of the US!
That's a great picture and very intereting. I've never heard of an African Methodiost Episcopal church. I wonder if the congregation consists mostly of people from a certain African country, also I wonder if the services are held in English or multiple languages. Pretty cool.
@ James - The African Methodist Episcopal Church is a large denomination that originated in this country and is comprised primarily of African-Americans. It was established as a counterpoint to other denominations which treated blacks as inferiors. You can read more about it here: http://www.ame-church.com/
@ Lee - I think, Lee, if you check out the link I wrote in a response to James, you'll find that the AME was, in fact, quite ahead of its time...and provided a haven for the black community where they could be proud of who they were.
Even today that works for them. 'Cause I'll betcha they aren't going to feel welcome at the big Presbyterian church a few blocks away.
Ah. I've heard of AME churches but I never knew what it stood for until now. the concept seems a little out dated imho. The funny thing is that I'm black and Christian. Just call me post racial. :-) Thanks for the info Jacob!
Wonderful architectural photo. I like the precision of the church against the sublty swearly (sp?) sky and the complimentary blues betw. the windows and the sky.

I understand why they added this building to the Register, this church is perfect in its own way.

ReplyDeleteThis is what churches are supposed to look like. Not the crystal palaces they build today.
