  8. What in the world is our beloved Doree doing down your way?! We have had a pair of nesting doves on our deck. Once she laid eggs in our deck flower pot, another time she used one of our deck chairs. Fun to see the little ones fledge.

  10. Love? He looks a little standoffish. Never trust a turtle dove who won't look you in the eye.

  13. Nice photo! There is a certain kind of dove here that is very pretty, with a dark ring around its neck. I have a photo of one my neighbor feeds when it comes to her window sill, so I will post it soon.

  14. Nice one! You make it look like a painting. Speaking of birds, I loved your comment about the owl - that owls always seem to look "dangerously bored." I'd never thought of that, but you are right on target! Their expressions make sense now!

  16. Gorgeous. This bird seems fairly comfortable hanging out on this rail. We see lots of doves around here..... but in high places. Roof tops, trees, telephone poles..... never at eye level like this.

  17. The name in Italian is 'tortora', from the Latin 'turtur', which is probably the common source of the term for both languages.

  23. We have some Mourning Doves that nest in our yard that look like this. We also get a flock of ten Ringed Turtle Doves that spend time in the yard. They have a dark ring around the back of the neck and are a little bigger and they have a different call. I like the doves but not so much the Pigeons which are also called "Rock Dove". I don't know why that is.
You made a beautiful portrait of this little one.

  24. Beautiful, even though they do somehow remind me of their yucky windowsill cousins.

  26. @ JM - I have no idea. They are called by other names in other areas. I think they're really a pigeon in disguise! :-)
