These folks call themselves Tea Party Patriots. I talked with the gentleman getting out of the SUV and he said he believed President Obama is a socialist, a Muslim, that he wasn't born in this country and has done nothing whatsoever to benefit the U.S. since he became president. Therefore, "Obama must go."
My attempt to initiate a rational discussion was unsuccessful.

ReplyDeleteLoved your comments about The Citadel. I never could figure out why anyone would go there. It was fun as a visitor, though. Got some great snaps. Have you ever read Pat Conroy's _The Lords of Discipline_, a fictionalized version of a military school, thinly disguised as The Citadel. I'm rereading it after our visit.
Not surprised at all about the lack of rational discussion. Seems that the caustic division is not limited to congress these days.

ReplyDeleteAmerican politics seems so bizarre to me! I think I would be in a state of outrage for the whole campaign which seems to start right after you have had an election! A rational discussion is not something these people would understand.

ReplyDeleteAngry closed minded people do not want to hear the views of anyone who does not agree with them but they want to shout their views on public street corners. Good for you for trying though.
ReplyDeleteYou can't change people's minds about religion or politics (or most anything else!). I don't know where people get these crazy ideas from, but to each his own.
ReplyDeleteRe Barrie: it's a town about an hour north of Toronto. It's sort of an economically depressed area. Although I walked on their little "harbourfront" and it was quite nice, I don't think the rest of the city would be as photogenic. Or at least not in the same way.
Good for them for getting out there and demonstrating. I love to see people exercising their freedom to assemble and freedom of expression.
