This is the Loyal Order of Moose lodge in Ocala.
The LOM got it's start in 1888 as a fraternal and service organization. That is still their mission. While fraternal organizations seem to be a thing of the past, there are still many active groups. The LOM consists of 2400 lodges in the U.S., plus four in the Canadian provinces, involving over one million people,and they also appear in the Caribbean and in the UK.
They provide many sports and recreational programs for the members and their families. They support the Mooseheart Child City & School for needy children and teens which is located just west of Chicago. They also operate Moosehaven, a retirement community near Jacksonville, Florida.
You can see that little moose hiding in the shadow of the building.
The moose is their bouncer.

ReplyDeleteThe principle of LOM sounds wholesome and family oriented Lowell, I like their mascot moose sculpture, or is it a mural?

I've seen a Moose Lodge over the border in Upstate New York but I have never seen one here.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen one either. Didn't they belong to the lodge on the "Honeymooners" many moons ago?
ReplyDeleteMy parents were both very active members of the Moose Lodge. One time I even visited Mooseheart with them on a trip to Chicago. I remember it being a very nice place.
ReplyDeleteYes, the fraternal organizations seem to be fading. Do younger folks not care about service or are there other avenues for that these days?

ReplyDeleteMy Father-in-law was very active in the Moose Lodge in our home town...back in the day in a small town everybody belonged to a Lodge or the Country Club . There were very few other places to eat out ... All social life revolved around your lodge. They did and do good things, but people have so many other choices now and don't want to limit themselves to having to go to one place.
