This is the El Diablo Golf Course club house. Or it was. Some months back the club house burned and although you can't see the damage in this photo, the interior was ruined.
One day I played the course with some friends. The club house had not been repaired and the course itself was in disrepair. It is a very difficult course and none of us did very well. So, naturally, we decided to try again.
When I called a few days later to reserve a tee time, I was informed that El Diablo had closed. The owner had walked in that morning and shut down the entire operation.
So far as I know it has not reopened nor are there any plans to do so. And that's a real shame!
That's too bad!! But then I didn't know the devil played golf!!! Yes, I know, I'm being a smart ass! What can I say!! I'm sure you have another club anyway -- can't imagine that you'd do without golf!!!!
ReplyDeleteI bet the insurance didn't come through enough for him to repair the damage. Maybe someone else will buy it and reopen the course and you can try again!

ReplyDeleteI find it very sad to see businesses shut down, Lowell, especially good ones, and ones that I have been a customer and enjoyed.

ReplyDeleteI wonder if there were some economic issues at work. Here in Phoenix, there has been a bit of problem with golf courses closing. It's my understanding that at least 4 courses in the valley closed because they couldn't make ends meet. There have been all kinds of complaints from people who live near these places about fences, lack of fences, lack of maintenance to the course itself and other assorted issues around these vacant places. I live very near the Biltmore Golf course which is operated by Waldorf Astoria, the owner of the Arizona Biltmore Resort. That course seems to be doing quite well.
