For years, the City of Ocala has talked about building "lofts" or apartments in downtown. Previously there was discussion about revamping an older multi-story building which would be converted to apartments on the upper floor(s) while the first floor would showcase a variety of business enterprises.
This, obviously, was easier said and done. Early on one con man stuck the city for over $1 million before he disappeared into the night, which might indicate the city leaders did not vet him sufficiently.
Now, however, it seems some "lofts" are being built directly across from the town square. I know nothing more, but I think it is correct to say that these will be pricey unless, of course, folks object to living in what is still a somewhat sketchy area, especially at night.
But I think this is a step in the right direction. Other cities have done this and it has worked well and it is essential to revive the downtown area to make this a more livable city.
It is done in some places here.

ReplyDeleteI love the trees and sky in your photo, Lowell! Every time I hear the term 'loft' or 'condo', I know it bound to be expensive.
ReplyDeleteThe expense may be greater as the City Fathers attempt to recoup their previous losses. Hard to believe they got in so deep. One would hope for better but I guess that's an anachronism anymore.
ReplyDeleteThere's been a shortage of affordable housing here. Lots of lofts, but they're not cheap.

Definitely a good idea Lowell, we have many inner city apartments etc and they're so popular. More so with younger people who like to be close to work and clubs/restaurants.
ReplyDeleteIt is a good idea. They have done this here in Tallahassee too. Many of them are used by legislators and lobbyists who stay in them for only part of the year though.
ReplyDeleteIf it's done right, it could be a big plus for the city. Creating a walkable downtown is an essential step in revitalization. It took years and years of kick-start efforts before it took hold here.

ReplyDeletePasadena, CA. and Spokane, WA., have Lofts... and yes, pricey... but at least they are building vertically and not horizonally...
ReplyDeleteJane Jacobs, urban sociologist, says that downtown areas that become mixed use, retail, commercial, and residential, become safer as there are people present at all hours of the day and night. More people are concerned with safety on the streets.
ReplyDeleteWe live in a downtown apartment in Oregon and love it. Hope it works out for Ocala. But now we are happy to be in Florida at our "Canal Cottage".
