This beautiful animal was brought in to our vet by people who had overfed him terribly. He was so fat (about 120 pounds) he could not stand up and they wanted him put to sleep. The vet took him and changed his diet dramatically which made the dog pout and not eat for about 3 days. Finally, he began to eat and after a few months, he had dropped back to his normal weight of about 50 pounds. He's still with the vet and has become something of a mascot in that office.

Excellent post, Lowell. It is good learning that this dog's fate has been reversed. Bravo to your vet.
Oh! It was necessary to diet!!
looks so sweet...
sad that the owners wanted to put him to sleep.. anyways glad the vet gave back the golden a wonderful life!
Oh just make me cry. I had a Golden very much like this beautiful boy. I loved my Baxter so much. I hope this sweet one will find a good home.

It's sad that even though they liked the dog, they overfed it and were doing harm. Don't people have common sense?
nice shot, btw.
He looks like a good friend too! Glad someone took him in. :)
I am hoping that Karma will come visit the previous owners. How could they do that to this poor guy.
Very sweet dog. Anybody will love his company.
I don't understand how people can mistreat animals, whether by lack of common sense, compassion or cruelty.
Looks like it was saved from human stupidity...
I like Golden retriever: they are a little bit crazy the first years and after they look like doormats
une belle fin a cette histoire, je n'ose imaginer comment ces gens nourrissent leurs enfants
Overfeeding is another form of cruelty. God bless the vet. Bravo!
Lovely photo and I hope the dog gets a good home soon. People that over feed pets should be prosecuted for abuse, or at least reeducated.

Great action. Take care of an animal is a sign of your kind soul. Animals are our younger brothers.
Hugs my friend

i'm loving the dog. i'm applauding the vet.
Lovely photo and story - except for those criminal owners.
Oh goodness. Whenever I see obese dogs here, I always want to give the owners a lecture and scolding.
Glad to hear your vet managed to get him trimmed down. He's beautiful.
And I hope your vet's not giving him back to those people.
What a beautiful animal! Golden Retrievers are such loyal and loving dogs. I am so glad that this one got a second chance.
The previous owners should also be fed like they did to this poor dog! Glad to know about the happy end of this weird story.
I wonder if the previous owners were also suffering from the same problem.
Are you thinking of adopting, Lowell? Or are you up to it? He looks like a fine fellow - bravo for that vet!!
Excellent photo, Lowell. He looks thoughtful...
How wonderful he took the time and love to do this. Fie on those overeaters (and I'll bet they are) who brought him in.
This one certainly made me tear up. I don't understand how anyone could abandon such a beautiful dog. Goldens have such a gentle nature. If I were there, I'd take him home with me.
What a great story. We must be the stewards to our animals. Thanks for sharing. MB
Oh my goodness, I'm so glad there are people out there willing to do the right thing. What a cutie.
What an obviously sweet, sweet dog, owners can be so unbelievably cruel and ignorant. I have always been fond of veterinarian mascots, they always have such wonderful stories.
Gosh! 120.... must be around 60 kilo!? I am pleased that the dog came to a vet who wanted and also could help.
So the owners mistreated the poor critter and wanted to put him to sleep? That's outrageous! Glad that the vet took good care of him! Such a lovely dog!
God bless you!
