Beef cattle

According to my sources, there are at least 31 different beef cattle breeds. These are Brahmans.

Ocala claims to be the "Horse Capitol of the World," but we also have a number of cattle ranches/farms in the area. In fact, the property now known as On Top of the World (OTOW) was once part of a huge ranch consisting of many hundreds of acres southwest of Ocala. The Stone Creek property was purchased from OTOW. Surrounding OTOW and Stone Creek is what's left of the ranch known as the Circle Square Ranch, which must consist of several hundred acres.

These Brahman cattle reside on the Circle Square Ranch along with a huge herd of Hereford cattle. Just across the road from the Circle Square Ranch is another large herd of Herefords.

We hope the inexorable rush to development will slow to a crawl; that these delightful rural places continue for many years to provide a respite from the urban sprawl that contaminates so much of Florida's countryside.

I always loved Brahmans - there is something about them - don't know if it is weird, handsome or what but they always intrigue me.

Here's hoping those in the OTOW do not start complaining about any lingering odours....

nice looking Brahmans.

In my corner of the world, people move here because they like "the country" then try to change it to be more like where they came from. Sad, but true.

In Boston, the term Brahmin refers to the old (and once wealthy) families who have been in New England since the Mayflower landed. They have a certain frayed collar stinginess and slight haughtiness. These Brahmans would fit in perfectly.

When I have passed through Ocala, it has seemed like there are mile after mile of open land. Given the stalled economy, it will take a very long time to make very much of an impact on the rural nature of places like Ocala and its outskirts.

They look so undernourished...

I also hope that the sprawl will slow down. How many shopping centers and strip malls do we really need? That was one thing I never understood in Jackson. There were plenty of empty shopping areas, yet they kept building new ones. Doesn't make sense to develop just for the sake of development.

Anyway, love your cattle. They look relaxed. :)

I guess I know where the BEEF is now.

Who could not love to see a face like that one with the droopy ears. It would be sad to see the all the rural area replaced with pavement and buildings.

Saw many such cows in India. These, as did many in India, do look a bit underfed. At least they're not eaten in India! Moo!

Nice of the cow at the front to strike a pose for you!

Looks sad with the ears down like that - needs a good scratch on the head to cheer up!

I really like this photo. And your new header photo too, Lowell. Your definitely doing some nice things here. Florida would be a different place today if not for Disney and Universal. We can try to imagine how it would be. I'm imagining it would be much more rural, relaxed and a more enjoyable place for retirees.

Actually, these look exactly the cows we see in India.

Among the Hindus the Brahmins are the top layer of the caste system and they are vegans :)

Lovely capture!
