The first contractor never got off the ground, but took some of the city's money which proved to be a problem to recover. I'm not sure if the city ever got all its money back.
Then we heard about Millworks, which, as you can see, is another plan to develop a downtown area by creating residences, restaurants and a parking area. That, too, has stalled, and I haven't heard much about it for a long time.
It's too bad, because Ocala's downtown area could use restoration/renovation of this sort.

Hmmmm...sure sounds like a good idea!
I'm sure that as soon as home sales start to improve down there these schemes will go ahead! That kind of small in-fill development is quite popular here.
I like the idea of the rooftop gardens.
Sounds like a good idea, but the city cannot create a market for it. In Phoenix a developer built a row of Victorian townhouses with commercial space on the first floor and million dollar residences above, with private elevators, etc. The developer went bankrupt. So far, I think the only purchaser is the former mayor.
Pity. A rooftop sounds good!
It's inviting...I imagine the charming new houses and the fantastic beautiful gardens there!

This sort of idea seems to work well in the Greater Toronto Area.
I think this happens everywhere. It seems to be a good idea although bringing people and enough money together is a problem. Stanwood is a small old town and maybe 10 years or so ago a shopping center was built away from town and it is doing ok--although there are a few empty storefronts. Then someone decided if people could live and shop and never leave it would be ideal. It took several years and a large condo/office space/cute shop building was built. So far some residents, a gym and a real estate office. No cute shops though. I don't think it is working. MB
Ouch! So many of these concepts look good on paper. Some get built and don't fulfill their potential. Some do. And some stick their hands in everyone's pockets and end up smoke and mirrors.
There was something similar to this in Jackson, MS. Although I didn't really think the city needed more shops and apartments!:)

there is a new lot of live/work townhouses built here, but for some reason the work bit hasn't come to much and all along the street instead of shops there are empty storefronts with For Lease/Rent signs.
I also like the quaint use of the word 'automobile'!
