Cow at Chik-fil-A

Chik-fil-A has been much in the news of late. The owner of the restaurant chain made a public comment that as a Christian he opposed gay marriage. That set off a fire-storm of protest as well as support. A couple of city mayors entered the fray announcing they didn't want Chik-fil-A restaurants in their cities because they felt the owner's comment smacked of intolerance and bigotry.

Then a famous (or infamous) evangelical Baptist preacher/cum FOX News commentator suggested the establishment of a "Support Chik-fil-A Day" or some such thing. Some fundamentalist Christians gathered around Chik-fil-A outlets to show their support for the anti-gay marriage stance.

To counter the supporters, pro-gay marriage people have been busy organizing boycotts of the chain as well as setting up their own protests.

And so it goes. Certainly, the Chik-fil-A owner has a right to his opinion and the mayors were wrong in threatening to disallow him to do business in their towns. The protestors also have a right to disagree with the Chik-fil-A stance. They can march and shout and carry on but I think that's not ultimately effective. The best thing they can do is not eat at Chik-fil-A and enlist their friends to shun the chain.

If a Chik-fil-A outlet should discriminate against people because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, etc., then that's a horse of a different color and we have laws to deal with such discrimination.

Maybe what we need in this country is for people to shut up if they can't say something that is helpful, healing and contributes to the building of community. And that goes for both sides!

I had never heard of this chain until all this stupidity started up. I feel for the franchisees who will suffer for Cathy's ignoble statements.

This thing is far from over! There are businesses that advertise as Christian businesses. They have that right! we do have to be careful in trying to change some of our basic freedoms. They are not popular with some well organized and well funded people.

I think the owner should have kept his thoughts firmly to himself!

Watching to Chik Fil A debacle from afar is rather laughable. I agree that the owner can be against gay marriage if he wants to. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But I think his mistake was to donate to the campaigns in the name of his business. He should have made the donations in his own name and left the business out of it. I don't think there would have been so much fallout if he had done it that way.
But it's sort of typical in the US to get riled up about these little things instead of focusing on real problems. :S

I will never understand people who simply are against the happiness of others. And it seems the more christian the less tolerant they are. It's such a contradiction! Besides, there's so much to be worried about these days!

I totally agree with you.

It certainly has stirred up a hornets nest of controversy. Personally, I put my money where my mouth is. I don't eat there so none of my money goes to his discriminatory causes.

Lowell, when your are right, you are right. Couldn't agree with you more. If a business owner is trying to serve the public, his personal beliefs should be kept just that, personal. By making a public statement about his prejudices against gay couples he is alienating millions of potential customers who are horrified by his narrow personal beliefs. Those beliefs have nothing to do with his product or business, so why did he inject them? Seems that this was another poor decision on his part, and it will cost him dearly in the end.

Well expressed, Lowell. We ALL need to exercise our tolerance for other points of view. :)

Danish newspapers and TV have also been telling about it!
I agree with you, totally :)

Hmmm. I seem to be getting behind on my viewing of your fine blog, Lowell. I'm hitting a lull in posting too. Hopefully, some inspiration is right around the corner. I like you commentary here. It's balanced and perceptive. And the photo is cool, too! It's difficult to understand how chickens have gotten into the election year agenda. But here we are! And, as Imus likes to say, chickens are bisexual! Who knew?
