The first bench, located in a garden, appears to be functional, although not very attractive. The second bench, however, seems to have lost all of its original usefulness and might even be dangerous to sit upon.
I like your title and the cadence of your description .. sad that the benches are not functional .. in my will I plan to leave some extra money such that my children and grandchildren can sponsor a bench in our memory .. a good functional bench somewhere they will often pass and remember.
PS: A typical German breakfast consists of cold cuts and cheeses on rolls or sliced bread. There are also often spreads (cheese spreads, avocado, hummus, etc.). I actually quite like the breakfast tradition here. Although I miss pancakes sometimes. :)
I agree, that second one is a little scary and there is nothing quite as troubling as sitting down and breaking a bench. That sort of thing doesn't do very much for one's self esteem.
I like the rustic looks of the first bench. The second one looks like a board laying on some blocks. I don't think I would try sitting on either of them.

I wouldn't risk sitting on that second bench. I definitely would not be able to get back up if it fell!
I'm not so sure the first one is all that functional, Lowell. Those slats look ready to say goodbye at the next opportunity!
Once upon a time.....
:)
Even the 1st one looks like it could fall backwards! I think I'll stand. ;-)

I will stand here and admire the first one. :) Great captures, Lowell.
We have quite a few benches around here that look in need of repair too, the second one is definitely one to photograph rather than sit on!
The Tale of Two Benches can only end in woe...

Two very different benches, but both need some affection :-)

Oh I think the first has a wee bit of life in it yet :) the second, not so much :)
Both look scary to me. I think I'll walk on, thank you. ;)

... with apologies to Dickens, "It was the best of benches. It was the worst..."
Don't sit on the second one Lowell...
A funny post with an excellent title!
The first one could use some work. The second is beyond help!
The second was never much even when new. Knock it down!
