The Casements - John D. Rockefeller Residence

The Casements, located along the Halifax River (Intercoastal Waterway) was constructed in the early 1900s for a clergyman and his wife.  It was purchased by John D. Rockefeller in 1918 and he used the 9,000 square foot home as his winter residence until he died at the age of 97.

After his death, the property was used for a variety of purposes, including a school.  Then it was left to deteriorate.  Eventually, it was named a "Historic Property" and was purchased by the City of Ormond Beach, which proceeded to restore the place to its original grandeur.

Currently, The Casements serves as the Cultural Center for the City of Ormond Beach.

We'll post a few more photos of the gardens and grounds tomorrow.

It's beautiful and I am happy that it will be taken care of and open to the public.

Beautiful place and terrific captures for the day as always. By the way, I understand from Lee that you are a fan of Richard Dawkins. His book, The Magic of Reality is awesome!!

It looks like it was a mighty grand residence for a clergyman, especially if it was enough to catch the eye of a Rockefeller. How nice that it was saved and restored.

Very very cool, Lowell. I visited the Rockefeller estate near the Hudson River two years ago and it was absolutely fascinating.

I cannot imagine living in a house that is big enough to be a school or cultural centre!

It looks like a gorgeous place. This is probably one of several huge homes he owned. Sometimes I wonder why the wealthy need so much space.

Nice house. I am glad it wasn't left to deteriorate. What would one do with 9000 ft of house??

We featured a sign and a public figure, today, too! John D. Rockefeller IV served WV faithfully from 1977- 2015. At first we were skeptical of an "outsider", but he proved his commitment and loyalty to the state.

Happy Friday, Lowell,

Very impressive but then I wouldn't have expected less of Rockefeller!

(Tell MB to buy a tripod!)
