These blocking pillars are part of a larger set in front of a local bank. Their purpose is to keep vehicles from running over patrons who walk the sidewalk up to the entrance of the bank but also to stop a person or persons from ramming a large vehicle through the front doors of the bank. Such pillars have become quite popular among many business establishments in recent years.

I love the colour, it really stands out!
Also known as bollards.
I wonder if these are going to start popping up like picket fences. They might have saved some lives in Nice.
Hmmm.. have seen some of those in Mumbai too.
We have them too but no one has driven a vehicle through a bank.
I think they're a really good idea Lowell, especially these days when the world seems to have gone mad and people are getting more desperate!
I see on the news that at least once a week someone drives a vehicle into a building in the Phoenix area. I guess these pillars might be a good idea. Now if we could figure out a way to keep them from driving the wrong way on the freeway, we would all feel a bit safer.
Yes they have, I see many of them around here and they served the same purpose.
You see them here too - a good idea these days!
They are present here as well.
We need those because of all us senior citizens who might forget which one is the brake pedal. (I really need to stop making ageist jokes, even though I am one). On a more serious note, thank you for your support of my post this morning. I was glad yours was the first comment -- I'm not real confident of my ability to get across real thoughts and opinions, so it made me feel good about posting it. Though in your case it was definitely preaching to the choir, I hope it will make some people think a little.
So do not invade the sidewalk, here also there 😊
Un abrazo.
