[Note: Cedar Key is located on a small island off the west coast of central Florida, about 75 miles from Ocala. It is a unique fishing/clamming community pretty much unchanged since its inception.
The first photo below is mine. The other photos I borrowed from the Internet. We had no desire to visit Cedar Key in the middle of Hurricane Hermine.]
Originally, this was a restaurant known as the Captain's Table.
Somewhere along the line it became a bar called Coconuts.
It's last incarnation was as the Rusty Rim.
The Rusty Rim caught fire and was severely damaged.
It has been sitting vacant for several years as per the photo below.
Hermine came through yesterday and pretty much destroyed what was left of the Rusty rim.
Hermine also left a trail of trash along a downtown street.
And what would a hurricane be without some moron reporting while standing on the Cedar Key pier?
Past experience with hurricanes has led the powers-that-be in Cedar Key to require than new homes be built on stilts. In one storm some years ago the water rose to 12 feet above sea level. According to the news reports during Hurricane Hermine, Cedar Key was experiencing a water rise of 7 feet above sea level.
We have great affection for Cedar Key, first visiting the island in 1988. Down through the years we have taken hundreds if not thousands of photos in Cedar Key. You can see many of those photos by visiting our Cedar Key blog here.

Wow.... and yikes.
It makes you wonder what you have to do as a reporter to annoy someone enough to be sent out on hurricane reporting duty.
I thought of you when they mentioned Cedar Key on the news about the hurricane. Such destruction!
Wouldn't want to be the person reporting on the weather. :)

I wonder if the owner of the Rusty Rim was simply waiting for a natural disaster like Hermine to take care of the demolition.
(Yesterday's flower is still gorgeous...as it will be tomorrow...and next week...and probably even next year!)

Nice to see you again, Lowell. I’ve heard Florida is often hit by hurricanes though it is a paradise for the retired. Whenever I hear the news of hurricane, I remember you. Last week’s typhoon which hit the northern Japan caused terrible damages. I hope the upcoming typhoon won’t affect the already damaged area by the earthquake. A smile escaped from my lips to see the typhoon reporter as I often see the similar scenes on TV.

Goodness me, mother nature was determined to finish off the Rusty Rim, it didn't stand a chance 😃 I can't imagine how it must feel to experience a hurricane Lowell, hope I never do!
Wow! That is just scary. That would be a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.
I did think of you when I saw a news report about Hermine. Interesting reading background info about Cedar Keys. It is always heartbreaking to see the aftermath of a storm like this. Hope the community can recover soon.
Thanks for these photos. I was wondering how the hurricane would affect you where you live. Hopefully, not as bad as it ripped through Cedar Key. "Moron" is a good word for that guy standing on the pier.
I watched it on our news, must be really frightening.
Wow the power of Nature. I always wondered about the mentality of reporters who thought it was a great thing to broadcast while being blown around or half drowned. Stupid me thinks. I heard there was a fatality in Ocala caused by a falling tree. Be careful!!
BTW: a smattering is several while a plethora a many---there ya go.
Another BTW: I asked Kylee about using HDR on here photos and she said "Um, I just take a picture--nothing else". So Whatever she does or doesn't do she takes a darn good picture.
