Before 1885, Ocala had no professional firefighters. It took a devastating fire that destroyed most of downtown Ocala to set things in motion. Ocala Fire-Rescue was formed 125 years ago, in 1885.
Today there are six fire stations, fully equipped to handle any emergency. The firefighters are well-trained and must obtain Florida certification.
Firefighting and rescue can be very dangerous and these men and women are our first line of defense. They work 24 hours on and 48 hours off. Salary begins at $32,000 per year.
Kudos to all of our firefighters and rescue teams everywhere!

I remember when I was a kid that I wanted to be a fireman. Sounded glamorous or something.

I hope there were no fires at your local mall. I couldn't stand to think of your shopping being interrupted!
I love firetrucks too, but I'm always startled to see firefighters in uniform shopping for groceries like regular people.
Seems like they should shop in plain clothes, and then change in a phone booth if needed.

Nice truck! Thank goodness for the police and firefighters, who put their life on the line to save a stranger.
That's not much money for risking your life. More power to them. My cousin was a volunteer firefighter for years.
Fire rescue squads are the best .. had first hand experience with them when my parents lived in FL and needed help
