It probably is somebody's Santa and he's getting an early start.
I think he is thinking "What did my wife tell me to get at the mall? I can't remember. I better write it down this time, if I can think of it."

Just bought my first Christmas present today! My goal is to be done before the madness begins!

I think he's waiting for his wife. He should bring a camera to the mall, forget the pencil and paper.
