Scenes from a Deli

The City Daily Photo theme for February 1, 2016, is "Scenes from a Coffee House."

Unfortunately, in this part of central Florida, coffee houses per se are few and far between.  We are, however, blessed with TooJays, a gourmet deli chain based in Palm Beach, Florida.

There are two TooJays in The Villages, which is about 30 miles south of Ocala - one in Spanish Springs and the other in Lake Sumter Landing.  The Lake Sumter Landing deli is pictured above.

The menu is replete with delicious possibilities, the service is generally quite good, and the ambiance is warm and welcoming.  During the winter months, however, when we are inundated by northerners seeking sunshine and warmth, both places are very crowded, so you may have to wait in line to get a table or booth.

I can't imagine a town without a coffee shop. Really?

I do like the looks of this place, though.

I missed my coffee breaks when we were in Florida over the holidays. Sometimes it was hard even to find a Starbucks! Glad you have this deli-style place. That can be as good (or better) than a cafe.

I much prefer a good deli over a coffee house so this suits me just fine. Pastrami anyone?

Many of the thousands of residents of On Top Of the World (OTOW) and one of many other huge retirement communities in Ocala, comment on the total absence of a large sit down restaurant, like TooJays in the Ocala area, which draws from all directions due to the availability of retail, educational, theater ,and known as the Horse Capital of the USA. TooJay’s also has a well known and accepted specialty menu of New York Style Delicatessen! I believe that is why they are so popular in the Villages and all over South Florida. Irene and I have have lived in Palm Beach County, Tampa, and St Petersburg, before deciding to settle ten years ago in Ocala, It boasts of an expanding economy, and the of the highest rated Community Colleges in Florida. The Western stretch of Route 200 is rapidly expanding and many areas catering to Seniors are currently being planned to open within the next year or two,. with its easy access to and from I75, and the Turnpike, in all directions.

Ocala is one of the oldest Jewish communities in Florida its large population is accustomed to TooJay’s menu. Many of us no longer drive the 30 miles to the Villages and have welcomed the new restaurants as a needed addition to the fast food chain restaurants of this area. Within the past ten years, Ocala has enjoyed a large number of Ethnic restaurants of all types and now has at least two or more,. Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian, and others in addition to several excellent Steak Houses and three new upscale Barbeque restaurants in addition to most of the fast food chains ,with more to come, according to the Planning Bureau. Many of us no longer drive the 30 miles to the Villages and have welcomed the new restaurants as a needed addition add the fast food chain restaurants of this area.

“The OTOW American Jewish Club’s most popular Member’s Only luncheon is still catered by TooJay’s and hopefully will be again in 2016! We look forward to it, as we have not been to TooJay’s in a long time.

Must serve tasty food and good coffee if people are willing to wait in line.

I'd be quite happy having a bite to eat there.

We don't have one up here, but my daughter in Orlando loves TooJay's. Guess I'll have to try it next time I visit.

We ate at TooJays when we visited the Villages a couple of years ago (or was it last year... well, one year....). And I remember that it was a nice restaurant! I have seen this theme day on a couple of other blogs this afternoon and it is making me lonesome for Oregon where we have about 10 coffee shops within walking distance of our apartment. Of course it is the rainy gray Pacific Northwest, the home of all things coffee. Not a daily treat for us even when we're there, but I do miss the occasional latte while we're here ... probably even fewer in this part of Florida than where you are.

I suppose in a warmer climate it's not unimaginable to be without coffee shops. What we don't have in numbers we make up for with drive-through coffee places. We can't do without our coffee in the Pacific Northwest.

It looks like a great place for a good deli meal with a strong cup of java. Coffee house are fun but delis are terrifically delicious!!

No coffee houses in Ocala? Surely you jest. (Nice plug for Ocala from Bob, above.)
