The Crazy Cucumber

The Crazy Cucumber is a restaurant/bar combo located in the Heathbrook outdoor shopping mall. Its owner is a well-known restauranteur in town and has high hopes for the place. The night we were there, it was mostly empty inside (as you can see from the photo) but the tables outside were full of people drinking and eating and having a good time.

The service provided by our waitress was excellent. The food, however, was mediocre at best. One of our party ordered angel hair pasta from the menu but when the food was served, she got a plate of totally different pasta which lacked flavor and taste. A manager told us they were out of angel hair pasta.

It was quite incredible that they didn't offer other options when they realized they were out of a menu item, and instead plopped down a plate of unwanted pasta on the table as if that would be just fine.

We will not be returning anytime soon.

Wow! They should have apologized for not having it and given a nice discount for it or offer other choices. Onetime when we were living in Alaska, we went out for pizza and we ordered a cheese pizza with onions and peppers. After 45 minutes of waiting, the waitress delivers our pizza. We were already aggravated because of the long wait, and the pizza had chicken on it. We told her this is not what we ordered and she said just pick off the meat. Instead we picked up ourselves and left. Your story reminded me of that crappy service and we never went back :)

I never thought of trying it even though I like a cucumber on occasion. I avoid all kinds of “crazy" things though. I am happy I never tried as I DO NOT ENJOY SUBSTITUTIONS WITHOUT AN EXPLANATION AND SOME CHOICES. I SEE I DID NOT MISS ANYTHING WORTHWHILE.

We had a thoroughly delightful experience on our first visit to the brand new Jersey Mike’s Subs on the side of Publix’s near OTOW. Irene had a Philly Cheese and I had a small (actually huge) grilled pastrami Reuben. It was great and I ate the whole thing and licked my fingers when no one was watching.

Service, cleanliness, etc was very good. They have small tables for eat-in or take-out. We shall return. They had a steady stream of customers while we were there. I also found I prefer Pepsi to Coke too, which I have not had in a long time. They have a very large menu and are just a few doors from the great Chinese takeout we like too. Yummy House, though, is the best ever

Now all we need is a Jewish deli nearby,. I cannot believe there is none yet, with so many really good food outlets here in the area and most do well.

Enjoy the New Year and many more!!!

Yup there should have been no charge for the one meal.

When we last lived in Phoenix we discovered and loved Jersey Mike's subs so I know what Bob is talking about.

As for the Crazy Cucumber, I'd say they're not long for Ocala if that's the type of food service they provide. I would not go back either.

Sounds like they're unclear on the concept. I wonder what they'd have thought if you'd put $10 down for a $20 check and said, "I'm out of 20s."

How rude, Lowell! I can't believe that they didn't at least tell the customer that there was no angel hair pasta and offer an alternative suggestion! Sheesh! And the fact that not only did they do this but the food was mediocre would certainly be adequate reason for a client not to return!

They seem to be intent on driving customers crazy!

Sorry service for sure. I probably would not go in anyway because I am put off by the name---oh well. going out to eat sometimes is so disappointing. Mainly is because the food at home is so much better. haha

You must find another nice restaurant

Well that wasn't a good experience Lowell, bit of a shame really, there might have been something different that was completely acceptable to your friend. I think the old cucumber is going to be chopped if it keeps that up!

An awkward name! And yes they definitely should have told you that they were out of that pasta.

Not an appealing name for a restaurant....but, perhaps that's just me. Word of mouth will make or break a restaurant. Sounds like they have a lot of work to do to make the place successful.

I cannot understand the attitudes of some people ...

So much for the owner's 'high hopes'. It's never going to survive with service like that. They should rename the place "In a Pickle".

I love the name but not a fan of how they treat their customers!
