Airboat at rest

Airboats, which are flat craft powered by an aircraft engine in the rear, are used throughout Florida, especially in the Everglades in the south, but also in swampy areas and places like the flats of Cedar Key. They ride high and skim across water and grass without getting hung up as would a regular boat.

They are very loud! This one looks relatively new and was located in the yard of one of our neighbors.

The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary, located just east of Ocala on Highway 27, is a rehab center for horses, providing a plethora (I love that word) of treatments for ailing equines. The center also provides therapy for hurting canines.

It is a rather incredible operation and you can read all about it here.

Going, going, gone!

While Lois Anne was shopping in a bookstore I relaxed on a bench. Naturally, I had a camera. These electricians arrived with their hoisting machine; drove up the sidewalk and then back again. On their way back, they stopped and disappeared through a hole in the roof. I don't know what happened to them after that as Lois Anne appeared and we went on our way. But I had captured their electric antics with my trusty camera!

Three scenes from Sholom Park and the Kreativ Blogger Award

We have posted a few photos of Sholom Park previously. Sholom Park, just west of downtown Ocala, is a beautiful meditational park, designed and donated by a local developer. Much more information about this facility is available here.

Kreativ Blogger Award

Merci beaucoup to Nefertiti for this beautiful Kreativ Blogger award. Please check out her blog, Le Temple de Nefertiti, here and her other blog, Une photo un souvenir, here.

McAlister's Deli

McAlister's Deli is relatively new to Ocala, having opened a few months ago in one of our new shopping areas. It offers a variety of sandwiches, salads, pizzas, and other accouterments. McAlister's is clean, comfy and the food is good. We have patronized the place on numerous occasions and would give it an "A" rating.

Owl at bird show - Silver Springs Park

I got the feeling this owl did not like being photographed. Fortunately he was tethered to the trainer.

Oranges - in our Secret Garden

If we get some cooler weather, these oranges (tangelos, actually) should be sweet and ready for picking by late December.

Butch Aten, D.V.M., Melanie and Brit, the Guard Cat

Dr. Butch Aten has operated the Baseline Animal Hospital for the past five years. His motto is "Quality Medicine, Quality Care." Just recently, Dr. Aten treated our Golden Retriever, Haley, for an ear infection. He provided quality care and quality medicine, and Haley's doing just fine. Kudos to Dr. Aten!

This is Melanie, Dr. Aten's assistant. Melanie has a way with animals, as you can tell. In this photo, she's holding Brit, whom I have named the Guard Cat. It would appear that Brit runs the place - sometimes from the top of Melanie's desk! The Guard Cat takes no guff from anyone, especially canines!

Here's Brit the Guard Cat in its position of authority, high atop a file cabinet, where it can survey its domain and all who enter therein. Pay the proper respect and the Guard Cat will allow you the privilege of taking its photograph. Fail to pay the proper respect, you're likely to get a tail in the face and a failed photo opportunity.

Big Brother watching you at Walmart

Ocala is so fortunate. We have three Walmart stores! Heh, heh. That's no big deal, but look at the top of the entrance to this "main" Walmart located near the Paddock Mall.

Spy cameras are watching you!

Today, in Orlando, a Walmart store was robbed of about $200,000 by a man who waltzed in dressed as a Walmart employee and wearing a Walmart badge. He pushed a cart into a back office, opened a safe, stuffed a couple boxes full of cash, and walked out of the store not to be seen again.

I don't know if the robbed Walmart had cameras above its entrance.

I just thought of something! I'll bet the cameras you see here caught me taking photos of this entrance. Yikes!

The Lady & the Vagabond plus the Pixel Perfect Award

These two were photographically captured at the Paddock Mall in Ocala. I do not know if they were friends or not, but they remained in conversation for quite some time. Then, the young lady went back to her job peddling rejuvenation pills from the Dead Sea.

The Pixel Perfect Award has been awarded to Hilda at My Manila. Hilda's beautiful photography exemplifies perfectly what this award is all about. And as most of us know, Hilda is a strong supporter of CDP and is always willing to help any blogger in need of information or assistance.

The Pixel Perfect award is given to a photo blogger who exhibits exceptional photographic skill in terms of artistic creativity, composition, sharpness and exposure. The criteria for receiving this award also includes a commitment to the City Daily Photo community.

Congratulations to Hilda. Please check out her beautiful blog here.

Masking fears of Halloween

I know, Halloween is still a few weeks off, but it's never too early to get ready. You can buy these delightful masks for your kids at the local party store right here in Ocala!

Trick or treat!

Gunn's horse farm

You might ask Gunn White of Stavanger, Norway, how he got to Ocala and bought a horse farm. Gunn has a wonderful blog, which you can access here.

We had a problem getting a good shot of Gunn's farm, so the second photo shows another nearby horse farm. This was shot with a Nikon F4s, using Fuji Velvia 50 slide film.

Halloween approaches

Halloween (All Hallowed Eve in churchy terms) will soon be here. Our neighbors are decorating their yards and houses. You will find wispy strands of spidery webs, ghouls of various sorts, witches, pumpkins, skeletons and other such silliness on houses, windows, hanging from trees, etc.

And on Halloween night, a steady stream of very weird looking people will come banging on our door wanting treats, threatening to do us harm if we do not fill their little bags with something they perceive to be of value - like candy bars.

What's really ghastly is that parents bus their kids into neighborhoods other than their own to more readily fill up those little bags.

But, we'll be ready. Certainly don't want to come to any harm. We could, I suppose, scare them off with our Golden Retriever, but that doesn't work, 'cause she just walks out the door and licks their faces until they deign to pet her!

The Glass Bottom

Photo number one was taken just the other day at Silver Springs Park in Ocala...it is one of the glass bottom boats now in daily use at the park. The second photo is an older model glass bottom boat which was used some years ago in an archeological dig at the park known as the Discovery Expedition.

For an original glass bottom boat, please check out a post by Lois at Tallahassee Daily Photo here.

This fine specimen must have had his wings clipped, for he and another parrot sit unfettered on a perch near the entrance of Silver Springs Park. I think he was posing for me.

Conquistadore at Fort King Festival

We are "out-of-pocket" at the moment, visiting in South Florida. I've been unable to make my usual rounds, but will try to catch up as best I can in a few days. Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Silver Springs Park

Silver Springs Park is located just east of Ocala.

The lower center of this photo portrays the main spring at Silver Springs which is the headwaters of the Silver River. This spring pours over 550 million gallons of fresh water into the Silver River every 24 hours (enough to service all of New York City). This water, 99.8% pure, flows to the Oklawaha River, and then to the St. John's River and finally to the Atlantic Ocean at Jacksonville, Florida.
