Sculpture at the Appleton Museum

I do not know what this sculpture represents, but two of them guard the steps leading to the entrance of the Appleton Museum in Ocala. Perhaps a CDP blogger will be able to provide the answer.

I do not have the faintest idea of what it is, but it's gorgeous and interesting.

Looks ferocious to me. I promise to behave, really I do. ;-)

Nicely captured. Looks huge from this angle. Once again. I liked the colors!

I suspect they are Foo Dogs, meant to guard against evil spirits.

Dear Bob - How come you're so damn smart?

It look like some kind of Chinese tiger. Great shot.

Looks evil itself. Fight evil with evil.

It is a patina dragon guarding the steps. And quite the handsome art piece.

@ Dusty Lens - Thanks! I didn't know that!

My guess would be a Foo dog.

Well, I'm not going to answer! I wouldn't have known anyway, except that it has an Asian feel to it. It's doing a good job at guarding from evil.

Whatever it is, it's impressive.

I don't think I would have guessed a dragon - but now that I read Dusty Lens' comment, I can see the dragon in it! WOW!

I don't know what it represents but it surely was inspired by the chinese lions/dragons on the sides of temples and palaces entrances.

I have no idea what it is, but I like the way it looks!

This definitely looks Chinese. My wife and I collect Asian art. Do they have much of an Asian art collection inside the museum?

I found your site and have signed up to follow it though your comments on Julie's Scottsdale Daily Photo site.

@ Dave - Costa Rica - It's been so long since we've been inside the museum, I can't say what they have at the moment.

Thanks for signing up to follow...we're delighted if you find our photos of value!

Best wishes!

@ Tricia - That's the trouble. I ain't too smart, so we've got to "drag-on-in" a Minnesota buy to esplain it!

Incredible statue! What kind of museum is the Appleton Museum?

Lowell said...

@ Lee - Rather than me blather on about something I don't know much about, here's a link:

We've been there a couple of times. It ain't the Louvre, but it's considered one of the best in Florida.

When you mention that the museum is not the Louvre, I would add that biggest is not always the best. I enjoy some small museums more than large ones, as you can appreciate the art in a smaller setting. In Paris, for example, my favorite museum is the Jacquemart-Andre Museum, which is a former private collection displayed in the house (actually, the mansion) of the collector, similar to the Frick Museum in New York City.

Thank you for your comments on my site about access to beaches. I left a long response, and since you mentioned that you have been having some trouble accessing the sites, I thought I would mention it here so that you would know to circle back and check the comment when you have time and the computer is functioning properly. My access to the sites has also been rather erratic during the last few days.

Glad to learn that they will protect from evil spirits ,because at first glance they don't look that friendly!!

That's an interesting sculpture. Glad I learned something here today too.

Quite scary to me but interesting.

A bit scary, so I suppose passers-by won't dare take a peek inside their property!
