I can't remember the name of these things, but they usually fly in flocks, or whatever you call a group of birds, and you'll find them in cow pastures and other strange places. Lois Anne called me outside yesterday and pointed to a point way up in one of our pine trees where she said four of the critters flew to take up temporary residence.
They stayed for awhile and then departed with a flapping of wings to a neighbor's front yard where they were joined by another dozen or so and the group meandered about the neighborhood picking at stuff in the grass. Then they left.
Why they chose to perch in our tree I do not know. Such a thing has never happened before.

Excellent choice for a picture. The ibis' bill looks like it might make a good backscratcher.
You are so lucky: I would like to have some beautiful ibises around. The only birds here are pigeons and seagulls: I live in an area ornithologically deprived.

We never had them around till about 5-6 years ago. Now they are everywhere;much like the iguanas. Perhaps nature has something in mind.
Wow, what a wonderful creature to find in your backyard. I suppose they can leave a big droppings if they're anything like Canada Geese, so watch where you walk

It is always weird to see large birds in trees when you usually see them on the ground. But it is a cool shot and as the bird thought---newsworthy. MB
Now that picture is just plain fun. He sure is a goofy looking thing isn't he? It's the Florida version of the Heron. Who knew they'd be tree dwellers. He looks pretty large..... good thing you were not standing UNDER the tree.

How fun to see that in your tree! We have some big white birds that hang out in pastures. They are called "Cattle Egret", not as large or as colorful as yours.
And he's huge. Looks like your yard was providing much needed food stuffs. Delicious grubs or something. What a cool looking bird.
That's a bird I never have seen here in the northwest. Our big bird around here would be the Blue Heron. Lucky you.

@ Buenos Aires - there were actually four of them in the tree, but I couldn't get a good shot of them all together. They were picking at the bark, so they must have found something they liked...but soon the joined another group on the ground and wandered through people's yards for a time and then flew away...
So exotic for me:) Great shot!
Amazing catch! Ibis are just great but unfortunatelly we don't have them here... Maybe with the climate changes, who knows! Lol! Big green red-headed parrots are allready thriving in Oeiras, so... :-)

I think he flew up there in that tree so he could pose for us Jacob! He's a beautiful bird. I see them around here but have never had one in my yard.
