The gateway to Ocala and The Pixel Perfect Award

We lived in Ocala for a couple of years before we noticed these posts. They are an enigma, located in a nondescript area far from the city's borders (they stand in front of the church I posted a couple days ago) on what is now a minor side street.

The only thing I can think of is that at one time, many years ago, they marked the city limits. But Ocala and Silver Springs are two separate entities, and Silver Springs is not a city, but a park.

I kind of like them, but they make no sense at all.

The Pixel Perfect Award

It is with great pleasure that Lois Anne and I award the Pixel Perfect Award to Vogon Poet and Trillian at Livorno Daily Photo!

We have long been impressed with the photography presented on Livorno Daily Photo and feel they are most deserving of this award.

This prestigious award is given to a photo blogger who exhibits exceptional photographic skills in terms of artistic creativity, composition, sharpness and exposure.

Vogon Poet has another excellent blog, Daily Photo Stream, where he posts photos taken on his various travels around the world.

You are invited to visit these blogs to share in their photographic excellence and please offer your congratulations to these fine photographers.

Jacob and Lois Anne, I really enjoyed your post (sorry, no pun intended) today. I had to laugh about the posts in the middle of nowhere and your description of why they make no sense. It sure looks like the entry to some upscale gated community, but then look at what's behind them. Not so fancy! I also applaud your choice for the award. I love that blog. It has class and style, and the photos especially appeal to me.

I'm very impressed with these pillars! They are old and beautiful! I liked a lot the flowers, I guess it is welcoming everyone for this place.

And I'm guessing no one has ever taken the initiative to either move them or build new ones right? Maybe they thought nobody would notice.

c'était peut être l'entrée dans un ancien quartier ou d'une ancienne propriété. ces deux portes sont belles.
it was can be the entrance in an ancient quarter or of an ancient ownership. these two doors are nice.

As for the entry posts I would say it is your mission--if you are willing--to find out whys and where-fors. Inquiring minds need to know. MB

The columns are really stately and important looking. Surely there's an interesting history!

Stop trying to make sense of everything and just enjoy!

Could the columns at some time in the past marked the entrance to a new developement or neigborhood? We have several, now rather buried on busy streets, that stand at what was the start of some builder's new area of homes, away from the then city limits, in the 1920s.

Livorno is SO deserving of your award. Always good stuff and most enjoyable.

I wonder if at one time there was a park there ...

You're very welcome, Trillian; but you do deserve it!

Hi Asta,

Silver Springs is an area east of Ocala...there is also a Silver Springs Park, one of the first "theme" parks in Florida. It's at the head of the Silver River where 1/2 million gallons of fresh water enter from an underground cave every day...there are glass-bottomed boat rides, other boat rides, old forts, a small zoo, and a variety of other things to see and do.

They also hold a series of outdoor concerts when it cools down - over the winter and spring with the big name acts; a lot of country such as Willie Nelson.

Many movies have been film here along with TV shows like Sea Hunt, and I Spy. A number of early Tarzan movies were filmed in these waters.

Unfortunately, what with all the Disney stuff in Orlando, the park has fallen on hard times and is only open a few days a week. But it's a great place to wander about. I've posted a number of photos from the park and will post more in the future.

They dont make much sense but not to post them wouldnt be making much sense either. Make sense?

Lowell said...

@ Tricia - The answer to your question is yes: the gods of photography! ;-))

At least there isn't a troll there taking money before you can pass!

@ Lee - Well, actually there was. But I rode over him with my horse!

As always, an interesting post. You find some really obscure things in that city of yours. I for one am a fan of city markers and/or monuments that make no sense what so ever. This one is great. It would be cool to see if you could find out just where the heck these things came from.... or what they are for.

Oh, thanks for the very kind words you left the other day and always leave with encouragement. You always take the time to come visit my blog and I appreciate very much that you do. I have taken your advice and will be trying to do some "multi-shot" posts when the time arises.

Always nice to have you come visit my friend.
