Oranges - in our Secret Garden

If we get some cooler weather, these oranges (tangelos, actually) should be sweet and ready for picking by late December.

Nicely highlighted photo, Jacob. I bet other americans are annoyed when you talk about cool weather like that!

*grin*

Yum. I used to love the scent that was in the air when I used to pick fresh oranges.

So you need cool weather for oranges to get sweet? I don't understand, but I'll take your word. Great photo. I also enjoyed the cat at your vet's office and the parrots.

I can imagine what 'cooler weather' could be there...

How wonderful to be able to go out in the backyard and pick a tangelo. This is a luscious shot, Jacob.

Oh, Jacob! I think you flunked 2nd grade fruits and vegetables class!
Those are LIMES!! Get the Gin and Tonics ready . . . .

Aren't oranges supposed to be, um, well, orange? Seriously, nice shot.

@ Vogon Poet - By "cooler" weather I mean we need some nights in the low 40's (F) or even high 30's (F) to bring color and sweetness. That's fairly cold for us, though. Although last winter we had a couple of days in the 20s (F)! Had the old fireplace going then, I tell you!

Lowell said...

@ Lee - Are you still in bed? You're sitting up in bed with your laptop in your lap looking at photos from CDP?

Yes, get up and get some tangerine juice!

And then go have a nice day!

Lovely shot Jacob! We had a tangelo tree in our yard when I was growing up. They are so good!

Citrus is a hit and miss thing in Bermuda. I have some grapefruit in my secret garden.

Lovely processing on this! Makes it feel more like a secret, doesn't it? When I was a kid in Orlando we had some orange and tangerine trees in our backyard. I really miss that!

Ah Florida oranges .. when my parents first moved down south they sent up crates of oranges and grapefruits even tho neither of us cares for them .. finally I got Mom to send us Honeybells... now those I love .. but the other Florida citrus not so much .. now that they've passed I sort of miss those sweet Honeybells

I love the shot. It could be on a citrus crate label. I really enjoy the confusion you cause by talking of oranges...you mean tangelos...OK, they're really limes. Cold weather? You have our friends thinking 6 below zero, Jacob. But, your lesson plan corrects all the misunderstanding and everyone goes away enlightened and full of new knowledge.

But, DO serve up the gin and tonics, OK? Leif Hagen ordered them for all of us, right?. That was the only straight up comment.

Hehe, Leif is too funny. He made me laugh!

It's just great what you have in your garden.

There is something magical about going out into your own yard and picking food from a tree. Be sure to say "Thank You"!
I like what you've done to the photo.

@ Buenos Aire - Leif isn't funny, he's from Minnesota and all those people talk weird! ;-))

Lowell said...

@ Daryl - You can't beat Honeybells! Unfortunately, we don't have any!

Ooooh, pretty! I saw some like this at our conservatory. Nice work.

Buenos Aires - If Jacob were half as funny as Leif is. . . . Jacob's disappointed that Leif has TWO more blog followers than he does. (Jacob might not approve my comment now)

What a delightful treat! They look healthy.

I love oranges but can't grow them here in the The Great White North. It's a good thing I also like apples, which we do grow here!

The photo is very belle but I don't understand why the temperature needs being cool in order for them to get ripe.

Tu nous offres de très belles couleurs, ces temps derniers !

You are a lucky man, Jacob! :-)

Oranges in December, eh? Now, how can I counter that? We did have golden chanterelles a couple of years back. In December. Hardly normal, though.

Lowell said...

@ Allison - Please don't overdo this; funny is in the funny bone of the hearer...

And furthermore, Jacob, unlike a Minnesotan I know, doesn't pay people to follow his blog. ;-)
