Redheaded woodpecker

After attacking one of our palm trees, this little cutie decided the pecking was better on our water oak. That's when I got her picture.

Beautiful bird!
(And in some aspects it is simmilar to the woodpeckers I know, in some -- quite different.)

That's a beauty Jacob. A little different from the ones I have in the garden, but I can tell they are if the same family.

Excellent on the fly shot of such a beautiful bird. The surrounding greens are vivid in a way we never see here.

So I see you decided to post a 'redhead' yourself! (Ha, ha!) Yours is at least a natural redhead!

We had one that took up residence in our utility pole. He did his pecking near the base for some reason and the pole had to be replaced.

That is a fantastic shot Jacob! I have been seeing these little woodpeckers on my water oak too. I also saw a huge pileated woodpecker hopping around on the ground last week. I couldn't believe how big he was. Unfortunately I didn't grab my camera quickly enough to get a picture!

Gorgeous red headed bird! I've seen some in different american countries but I'm not sure if they are the same woodpecker species.

This is a great photo. Aren't birds both rewarding and frustrating to photo? I just started a Chicago bird blog to go along with my city daily photo blog and it is so much fun. But I've taken nothing that is a cool as this one. Thank you for sharing it.

I hate it that my comments always get eaten at work!!! I even tried being anonymous and it still didn't go through.

Anyway - we have a lot of woodpeckers here but they are the red and black ones not the varigated variety. This is a beautiful guy though. You were lucky to get this photo!

Great photo. He is a "Red-bellied Woodpecker".
