Renovation time

A small house on the east side of Ocala is undergoing some renovations. Unneeded and unwanted items have been left by the side of the road to be picked up by the garbage men. What often happens, however, is that people will come by with pickup trucks in the night and haul this stuff away before the garbage men get there. Most of it will then be sold in local garage sales or flea markets.

The toilet sitting there reminds me of a renovation I saw at a resort in Bermuda in 2006. There was a grassy area behind the resort with a sign that said "Garden Court," but instead of gardens, it was full of bathtubs and toilets. I took a picture because it made me laugh. Is it illegal for people to pick stuff up from the curb like this?

I'm not surprised. The wc and the cabinets look like they can still be used.

@ Becky - No so far as I know. Word is that once it's put out for pickup it's fair game.

Better to recycle and resell than throw in the landfill, non?! Jacob Meister, why didn't you decorate the old toilet into an artistic water fountain for your pool area?!

Well, I guess the owner do not have to pay for transport to have it removed to a special place. That might be a plus! I am shore we have something similar over here, but I have never seen so "new" and ok items outside any gardens.
One place I have seen something similar. was in BUDAPEST in MAY one year. That was on a huge area, where people obviously just dumped what they no longer needed, and those who wanted could just TAKE what they wanted.

I always wonder about people who do 'midnight curbside'. Oh well. MB

For a moment I thought that this was my hometown! Even here many take away things at the dumpster, one guy I know has built a sort of museum out of salvaged items.

This is typical of what one sees here from time to time. It's all hauled off by Gypsies, usually.

In our throw away world, there is so much that can be reused.

I have been in the car when someone stopped at a trash pile. They stopped in broad daylight to dig out an old wood chair with no seat. They said they can restore it. I just wanted to get out of there.

This is done often in Vermont. Objects put out for free rarely remain 24 hours before they are picked up by someone who has a new use for them.

I'm not surprised either. You can actually make a living of what others dispose. A huge number of people in Buenos Aires (must) do so.

A public toilet??? I prefer a little more intimacy.

Funny.
It is a phenomena that seems pretty universal across the states.... at least in urban areas. I have been in some rural areas where people have tried this but folks driving by just thought the stuff was lawn ornaments.

Is there many garage sales in you area?

They do the same thing in Ft. L. Sometimes we time them to see how long it takes someone to pick it up. Not long!

I've also heard the garbage men will look stuff over and "rescue" an item that looks promising.

Let us know if that toilet shows up somewhere else!

You jumped straight from the flag question to a toilet. Strange, Jacob, how the unconscious mind works.

When I lived in Manhattan, the very best stuff was out at the dumpsters. You could furnish an entire apartment from other people's junk castaways.

Same thing happens here in NewYawk City

@ Frank - I wondered how you could afford all that beautiful furniture and gorgeous artifacts!

Lowell said...

@ Rob - Well, when you gotta go you gotta go...think of the convenience. So you lose a little privacy! ;-))

Once I put a sofa out at the curb and put a sign on it "Free". No one took it even though it was still in nice shape. I thought it was strange. We ended up taking it to Goodwill, they were happy to have it. Better to let someone take the cast off items than have them end up in some landfill.

That vanity is still usable! I'll be there at midnight. ;)

In Germany they call it junking. You can find some really good stuff sitting on the curb.

I think that it's terrific that people can salvage unwanted objects for reuse. Great shot!
